ANNOUNCER:  Welcome to the  More Photos Photography Spotlight brought to you by morephotos.com helping professional photographers with all their internet needs. Now here is your host, John Bentley.

JOHN: Today on the More Photos Photography Spotlight we have Bill Barbosa of Photo Designs, Inc. Bill is an award winning photographer and we have the pleasure of talking to him today. Welcome to the program, Bill.

BILL: Hello, John, how’s it going? Thank you for having me on.

JOHN: It’s going really good. It’s certainly nice to talk to a photographer that has such a great artistic flair to what you do. Give us a little overview of what Photo Designs, Inc., is, Bill.

BILL: Photo Designs, Inc., in a nutshell we capture the emotion. We just don’t take the picture. We photograph weddings, family portraits, high school seniors, babies, we do pregnancies. We totally capture the essence and the emotion of the image.

JOHN: Now, you are an award winning photographer. Tell us a little bit about that.

BILL: Some of our wedding albums and prints have won several awards in the state of Florida from what we’ve done. And we don’t photograph them just for print competitions. These are actual client albums or client portraits that we submit for competition. Albeit the Professional Photographers of America or the Florida Professional Photographers, and we’ve won awards with our work.

JOHN: Bill, how long have you been in business with Photo Designs?

BILL: We’ve been in business going on just about 15 years now and always in the Palm Beach area.

JOHN: Did you start out with traditional film and switched over to digital? Did you kind of come into that, or did you go right into digital?

BILL: I started photography when I was about 6 years old. My mom handed me a camera when I was a kid because she loved photography. So I started taking pictures as a young child. Took photographer in High School that’s where I did most of early photography, and I was part of the year book staff. Had all the cool film cameras and stuff like that in the past, but as soon as digital came out, we converted over to digital, and we’ve actually never looked back. We’ve been now digital going on twelve years.

JOHN: I understand that your family portrait business is a pretty big part of what you’re doing right now.

BILL: Absolutely. Our family portraits in the Palm Beaches and the West Palm Beach area we do a lot of. Actually here in the studio, especially for the holidays we do a lot of family portraits. For valentines we do lots of portraits, but we also come to your home. Especially for a newborn. We can go to the client’s home instead of the studio with the back drops and lighting and we do everything at the house for the convenience of the family and the children. Especially the young ones. In the old days, people used to have to get dressed up and they drove to the studio and waited two or three hours. I simplified that process. I now come to you and make life a lot easier. The pictures come out real good, because I’m a lot of fun with the kids.

BILL: Babies a beautiful, beautiful time in a family’s life. Shooting babies must be kind of a special moment. Photographing babies is absolutely amazing; capturing their images. One of the images I have and I believe it is on my website is Holden. I took his pictures three days after he was born in their home. The mom called me and we got his pictures. It’s absolutely amazing. You should see him now. He’s two years old and he’s just absolutely amazing; running all over the place.  I’ve captured him the moment he was born just about until now and he’s two years old. It’s a great recap of his early life.

JOHN: Now of course before the baby, the maternity photographs. Now do you find that…do you go into people’s homes for the maternity or do they come to the studio for that kind of work?

BILL: It really depends and while a lot of them will come into the studio or actually go on location. We’ll go to the beach; we’ll do a sunrise or a sunset session on the beach or on location by a lake or on the beach. It’s a very intimate, private moment just before the baby is born. We typically do this right around 8 months when the mom is nice and round, and she’s just right for the pictures, and it’s a very private, personal portrait that we do. We actually just delivered a portrait that we just did of a pregnancy session and when the mom got it, obviously after she had her baby she started crying right there. It was beautiful.

JOHN: Wonderful moment. Did you take pictures of her at that time? What a wonderful moment. I’m sure that weddings are a big part of what you do?

BILL: Actually it typically starts with a wedding and then we go to our baby portraits, but weddings are a big part of our business. We do lots of weddings in the area.  Some small house weddings to the big elaborate weddings the Breaker Resort or hotels like that. Weddings are fun, and I photograph weddings not because I have to, but I photograph weddings because I love photographing weddings. I love photographing the ambience of people having fun and just all the great stuff that goes into a wedding.

JOHN: Now weddings are kind of a trick, because you only have that one opportunity to capture that moment.

BILL: One opportunity and because of that, we typically at a wedding, we’ll come in with 3-4 spare cameras; 4 – 5 spare flash units; a couple hundred batteries. We come 100% prepared in case anything happens.

JOHN: You can’t put a price on that. Being prepared for anything.

BILL: You can’t photography somebody’s wedding again so it has to be perfect the first time.

JOHN: Very good. Now do you do a lot of senior portraits?

BILL: We do lots of senior portraits. Actually last year we did a little over 200 senior portraits, and we start the senior portraits right around June and they end right around the end of August and then we get all those images ready for the high school year book. Senior portraits is definitely one of my funnest pictures I do, because it’s just fun kids, live music, and we do get to photograph the kids as they are today. We do one picture for mom and dad, nice formal picture that they want, and then the rest of them in ripped up jeans, t-shirts, whatever they want, and they absolutely just adore their pictures.

JOHN: Sounds like a lot of fun.   We are in the studio with West Palm Beach, Florida, photographer, Bill Barbosa, of Photo Designs, Inc., and you’re listening to the More Photos Photography Spotlight.  Now we need to take a break for these important messages, we’ll be right back.

JOHN:  Welcome back to More Photos Photography Spotlight. We are in the studio via the telephone with West Palm Beach, Florida, photographer, Bill Barbosa, of Photo Designs, Inc. Welcome back to More Photos Photography Spotlight, Bill.

BILL: Welcome back. Thank you guys. Thank you More Photos.

JOHN:  Well we’ve been talking about the different types of photography you do, and you seem like you do a lot of different things. I did want to talk a little bit about the models that you do. Tell us a little bit about your model photography.

BILL: We actually do a lot of model stuff. As you know, we do some of the photography for the Miss Latina Pageant.   We try to capture images that will get the girl to get the guys notice with advertising. And that’s what the bottom line is. These young models are looking for work, and what I’m trying  to do for them is accentuate them so they can get a job. Give them different looks where they can show their comcord and they can definitely get a job from there.

JOHN: There you go. Now speaking of jobs, you also do some corporate photography don’t you?

BILL:   Actually we do. We do a lot of commercial work. We do the work for the Hilton in the Palm Beaches and the West Palm area. We do all the Hampton Inns in the area also. We’ve done several other hotels in the area. One thing that’s kind of cool you go to the Palm Beach airport and when you’re getting your bags claimed, there is a poster about 5’ x 7’ of a hotel lobby that I photographed and the first time I saw that I was a little surprised, but happy. It was very cool.

JOHN: Alright. Let’s talk a little bit about you mentioned different places that you’ve photographed. What about locations? What are some of the cities and communities in the area that you service?

BILL: We do a lot of work in Jupiter, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Island, Wellington, obviously in Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and talking about some specific areas in Wellington, we do a lot of the magazine work for the Wellington Magazine. Actually we’ve done most of their covers over the last six months. So if you ever in the Wellington area, pick up a Wellington Magazine, there’s a good chance that that’s my photograph cover on there, but we also do a lot of work in Jupiter. We’re now moving to more location up to Fort Lauderdale.

JOHN: What about facilities in the area that you work out of.

BILL: We do a lot of work…our wedding venues and some of our bar and bat mitzvahs we work a lot with the Breakers Hotel on the island of Palm Beach. We do a lot of work with Bear Lake Country Club and West Palm Beach on the Villages. There are several other venues Embassy Suites in West Palm Beach. We do a lot with them also.

JOHN: Now, Bill, you do photo books. A lot of people do coffee table books or photo albums. Certainly for weddings, but you also have something called the Love Story Masterpiece Album Collection. Tell us a little bit about this part of your business.

BILL: That’s a natural, fantastic concept that we came up with a little over 8 years ago. It’s a full recap of your wedding day graphically designed of your wedding day. It’s fabulous. It starts off with the engagement session that we do at the beach on location at the Country Club. We go anywhere you pretty much want to go, and we’ll have a great time, and we start off the wedding book like that and then on the wedding day from the time they get done doing the make up to the mess that’s all over the place, having a couple of drinks. The boys hanging out with the boys. We capture the essence of the entire day and graphically design a beautiful coffee table style book for you to take home.

JOHN: Now obviously you want to be able to present your clients in the best possible way. What do you do that makes your services a little bit more unique; separates you from the competition per se?

BILL: One thing that I do, I’m a real stickler about 100% customer satisfaction. If you’re not 100% happy with any of the images that we’ve done for you, I’ll go back and re-photograph it, I’ll change it, I’ll do whatever we have to do to make sure you’re 100% happy, because you have to remember there are three types of clients. A client who doesn’t like you, a client that’s happy with you, and a client who is ecstatic about you. A client that doesn’t like you is going to tell everyone. The client that is happy with you is not going to tell anyone, but they’re happy. And a client that is ecstatic about you will tell the world and the world is going to tell other people. Those are the clients I’m looking for every day. So when you leave my studio, I want you to leave ecstatic, because I know I’m going to get the referrals, and we’re a referral based business. Most of that comes from referrals.

JOHN: Wonderful. Bill we certainly appreciate you taking time out of your day to join us on the More Photos Photography Spotlight.

BILL: It’s been a real pleasure. Thank you for the interview. It’s been a lot of fun. Thank you very much.

JOHN: Before I let you go, why don’t you give your website address and contact information for our listening audience, Bill.

BILL: Our website is www.photodesigninc.com and you can reach us at (561) 242-BILL (561) 242-2455. The easiest way to remember that is 242-BILL.

JOHN: Wonderful. I tell you what. If you’re in the West Palm Beach area, and you’re looking for a quality photographer, I would definitely recommend Bill Barbosa, and his Photo Designs, Inc. Thanks again for joining us today, Bill, and thank you listening audience for tuning into the More Photos Radio Photography Spotlight. Have a great afternoon.
